Police Authority and Interagency Relationships
University police officers have full law enforcement authority in any county in which the university owns or controls property. All university police officers are licensed as peace officers by the State of Texas. Before assuming duties as police officers, they undergo an additional 10 weeks of training, supervised by a department Field Training Officer (FTO). University police officers are commissioned as peace officers by the Board of Regents of the Texas State University System under the authority of section 51.203 of the Texas Education Code.
The University Police Department has a close working relationship with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The University Police Department and the San Marcos Police Department have an inter-agency agreement that enhances their cooperation. Texas State University fraternities and sororities have housing off-campus. The University Police Department’s working relationship with the other area law enforcement agencies ensures that crimes and alcohol violations at these off-campus sites are reported to the University Police.
