Keeping Us Safe at Texas State University

A Message from the Director of University Police
Welcome to Texas State University! We have prepared some information for our faculty, staff and students to help keep us more secure.

Public Safety
Texas State University's Police Department (UPD) is a full-service agency providing law enforcement and crime prevention services to the university community. Our officers are trained and certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. UPD has an outstanding record of minimizing crime on campus and is continuing that tradition with several programs, including:

Community-Oriented Policing (COPS). In 1996, Texas State University received a COPS grant, which provided funds for four officers devoted to crime prevention initiatives on campus. Three additional COPS officers were funded in 1998. These officers conduct crime prevention educational programs, provide evening patrols for the safety and security of faculty, students and staff, and work with the San Marcos Police Department in reducing off-campus incidents.

Bobcat Bobbies provide safe escorts between Texas State University residence halls, classrooms, campus buildings, or parking facilities. The Bobcat Bobbies have four electric carts with flashing yellow lights to make their campus rounds. In addition, two guards supplement the Bobcat Bobbies by patrolling parking facilities and university grounds from 6 p.m.-2 a.m. Escort services are available from dusk to midnight.

Parking
Parking space is a limited resource at Texas State University. While we do have sufficient space available, it is not always where you want it to be. It is not possible for everyone to park next to a residence hall or classroom building. And while we recognize that many students need their vehicles to get to jobs or other off-campus activities, we strongly urge that they do not try to drive to class across campus. We have ample bus transportation available.

Calling the Police
In an emergency, dial 911 from any phone on campus or find a yellow emergency phone. Our response time for emergencies is normally less than three minutes. If you need general information or non-emergency service from the police, please call 245-2805 and talk to one of our state-certified dispatchers. Our response time for report calls is normally about four minutes. We hope we can help keep your time at Texas State University as safe and secure as possible.
