University Police Department conducts a comprehensive crime prevention program tailored
for our university, emphasizing personal awareness and personal responsibility for
protecting property. Some facets of our program:
Presentations
We conduct over 100 crime prevention programs each year for the university community on personal safety,
Operation Identification, DWI, drug dangers and sexual assault prevention. Our crime
prevention officers also assist in orientation presentations throughout the summer for
incoming students and their parents that describe the police department's services, the
crime prevention program and crime statistics. For more information, call the Police
Department's Crime Prevention Unit at 245-2888 or 245-2890. |

Operation Identification
We offer the use of engravers so students can engrave their driver's license numbers on
personal possessions to help deter theft.
Electronic Alarm System
We monitor a comprehensive system of campus intrusion and fire alarms.
 |
Emergency Telephones
We maintain six emergency call boxes and 25 emergency phones throughout
campus that provide direct contact with the police dispatcher. Use these phones to report
any crimes, fires or medical emergencies, and to request emergency assistance. Look for
the bright yellow boxes topped with blue lights. Push the "call" button and
you'll be automatically connected with the police. Stay on the linethe phone also
relates your location to the dispatcher, and a police officer will always respond to the
location of an activated telephone. Do not use the call boxes or emergency phones for
non-emergencies or to request an escort. Picking up the handset of one of these phones is
the same as dialing 911.Maintaining Facilities &
Surveys
Our Crime Prevention Unit conducts security surveys of buildings throughout the year and
monitors the campus to ensure that shrubbery, trees and other vegetation are properly
trimmed. The unit also conducts a semiannual lighting survey of the entire campus,
checking the adequacy of lighting near residence halls, parking lots, garages, pedestrian
walkways and building exteriors. Ongoing police patrols report any lighting deficiencies
and inoperable lights. |
The Bobcat Bobbies
Our student patrol, the Bobcat Bobbies, patrol the campus at night on foot and by electric
cart and report any suspicious or criminal activity. They also provide escort services to
on-campus locations. If you're concerned about walking alone on campus at night, call the
Bobbies at 245-2805, and they'll escort you to your destination.
Formed and funded by the UPD , Residence Life, and Student Service fees this police-trained student patrol
helps watch the campus at night. They report suspicious and criminal activity and check
the exterior doors of residence halls.
