Authority and Interagency Relationships |
| |
| University police officers have full law
enforcement authority in any county wherein there is property owned or controlled by the
university. All university police officers are licensed as peace officers by the State of
Texas. Before assuming duties as police officers, they undergo an additional 10 weeks of
training, supervised by a department field training officer. University police officers
are commissioned as peace officers by the Board of Regents of the Texas State University
System under the authority of section 51.203 of the Texas Education Code. |
| The University Police Department has a close
working relationship with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The
University Police Department and the San Marcos Police Department have an inter-agency
agreement that enhances their cooperation. Texas State University fraternities and sororities have housing
off-campus. The University Police Departments working relationship with the other
area law enforcement agencies ensures that crimes and alcohol violations at these
off-campus sites are reported to the University Police. |

| Reporting
Crimes and Emergencies |
| |
| The University Police
Department is responsible for law enforcement and security on campus. The department,
located on the corner of Edward Gary and Wood Street in San Marcos, operates 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year. Fully qualified and licensed police officers respond to calls for
assistance. |
| Emergency telephones are
conveniently located throughout the campus for reporting crimes, fires, medical
emergencies, and for requesting emergency assistance. These yellow weatherproof boxes have
a blue light above them for easy recognition. The emergency telephones provide direct
communication and location with the police dispatcher. The dispatcher answers the calls,
and a police officer always responds to the location of the activated telephone. |
| The University Police
Department has direct telephone and radio contact with the San Marcos Police Department,
fire department and emergency medical service. These agencies respond immediately upon
request. |
| To report an emergency or crime
in progress, call the Texas State University Police Department at 911. For non-emergency police services
during business hours, call the University Police at 245-2890. At night and on week-ends,
call 245-2805. A Police Dispatcher, trained and certified by the Texas Department of
Public Safety will take your call. |
