Bike theft is one of the larges problems on college campuses.  Thousands of dollars are lost every year in bikes and bike parts.  Many of these thefts could have been prevented.

· Contact UPD to register your bike

· Always lock your bicycle, regardless of how long you will be away

· Only lock your bike on approved racks, not trees or sign-posts

· Try to use a rack that is in a well-lit or well-traveled area

· Use a hardened steel U-type lock

· Register your bike with the University Bike Program

· Always ensure that your bicycle is locked properly and completely

Registering your bike with the University Police Department takes only a few minutes.  The Community Awareness and Resource Team register student’s bikes between the hours of 8 AM – 4 PM Monday – Friday.  It is recommended that you call 512-245-2805 to ensure someone will be in the office when you arrive.

·       Call 245-2805 and ask if someone is available to register your bicycle

·       Bring your bicycle to the University Police Department located in the Nueces Building

·       A Community Awareness and Resource Officer will have you fill out a short information form asking for your name, address, phone number, and student identification number

·       The Officer will record necessary information from your bicycle to register it.  The information will include your serial number, frame size, tire size, color, speed, make and model of your bicycle

·       A registration sticker will be affixed to your bicycle with a unique number by an Officer.  This sticker will guarantee your bicycle will not be collected during our bicycle roundup

This information will be entered into our registration system and kept on file.  If your bicycle is ever stolen, simply call with your registration number or your name and we will provide you with all the necessary information to file a police report.  By filing a police report and having all the necessary information, it greatly increases your chances of getting your bicycle back.
