UPD became a fully recognized police department in 1968, and we’ve grown over the years since then. Our department relies on dedicated professionals in the patrol division, criminal investigations, crime prevention and command staffing. Together, we can keep Texas State safe.

Minimum requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • 21+ years old
  • TCOLE certification
  • Provide a completed personal history statement 
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing (a driving record check will be performed on selected applicants)
  • Ability to work flexible hours, rotating shifts, weekends and holidays
  • Pass a physical assessment test
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • No convictions of a class B or higher misdemeanor or its equivalent

Police officers start at an annual salary of $46,000 and have the following benefits

  • Employee’s medical insurance automatically covered at no cost
  • Texas State contributes 50% of the premium for dependent health coverage
  • $5,000 basic life and AD&D policy beginning on the first day
  • Full-time employees earn 8 hours of sick leave each month
  • Full-time employees earn 8 hours of vacation leave each month
  • Up to 17 official holidays with pay each year
  • Police officers receive $10 per month hazardous duty pay for each year of service
  • Teacher Retirement System (TRS)
  • Voluntary supplemental retirement savings plans
  • Retiree health insurance benefits are available
  • Eligibility for college-credit classes while employed
  • In-house and external continuing education for peace officer license
