Safety Training Classes

UPD offers a variety of in-person trainings for members of the Texas State University community. Take a look at the programs below to find what fits your needs and interests.

Programs for Students

  • Teaches self-defense techniques, including hands-on skills, situational awareness and de-escalation.

    These courses are offered 3-4 times throughout the year. For scheduling info and to sign up, contact the UPD Crime Prevention Unit at 512.245.8341 or kravmaga@txstate.edu.

  • Explains how UPD operates and introduces policing skills and policies in a comprehensive 13-week program. This course is offered twice each year.

  • Demonstrates the importance of situational awareness in identifying possible dangers in your environment.

  • Provides keychain whistles for students to use in an emergency, and guidelines for personal safety.

  • Teaches survival techniques for an active shooter scenario, including what to expect when the police arrive.

  • Covers the dangers of alcohol abuse, along with resources for those struggling with alcohol addiction, and reviews state laws and university regulations concerning alcohol use.

  • Covers the dangers of drug abuse, along with resources for those struggling with drug addiction, and reviews state laws and university regulations concerning drug use.

  • Educates students about driving while intoxicated (DWI), including use of a driving simulator to safely experience the dangers of impaired or distracted driving, and provides a review of state laws and university regulations concerning DWI.

  • Provides sexual assault information and personal safety tips, along with resources for sexual assault survivors.

  • Provides information on how to secure your property to prevent theft.

  • Teaches the four responses to emergencies while on campus, which use standard language and actions to make responding to an emergency less stressful.
